1. A five-check selection order
- Name the target. Career completion, a particular CM track and a different PvP task do not automatically need the same choices.
- Match distance and style. Erzzy’s Global reference warns that mismatched requirements make a skill unusable for that setup.[1]
- Check phase and position. Look for conditions you cannot reliably satisfy; a skill being available to buy does not mean it will help this runner.
- Identify the job. Is the missing piece recovery, speed, acceleration, or a matching passive?
- Compare the actual SP cost. Use the current hint level and leave room for the rest of the planned skill set.
2. Speed and acceleration do different jobs
| Skill type | Its role | Question before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Speed / velocity | Raises target speed for a period. | Will it activate at a useful point on this track? |
| Acceleration | Helps the runner reach target speed faster. | Does its activation overlap the phase where that help is needed? |
| Recovery | Restores race HP. | Does the intended race plan require that recovery? |
| Passive / green | Adds a relevant stat benefit when its condition matches. | Does the course, weather or other requirement actually match? |
The role distinctions come from uma.guide’s skill explanation.[2] Use them to identify a missing function, rather than purchasing several expensive skills merely because they share a colour or rarity.
3. A concrete timing check: CM21
The CM21 preparation guide describes a final-straight boundary just before late race.[3] Before copying a skill choice, ask: is it a speed effect intended to carry into the phase, or an acceleration effect intended for the phase itself? Then inspect its style and position restrictions. The same phrase “final straight” does not make two skills interchangeable.
4. Check the hint discount before buying
uma.guide lists hint discounts of 10%, 20%, 30%, 35% and 40% for levels 1–5.[2] Use this small planning calculator; the game’s displayed SP price is the final check.
5. Your final purchase check
Keep a short list of required effects before adding optional ones. If a candidate fails a condition check, a low price does not rescue it. If two choices fill the same role, compare their usable conditions rather than assuming the more expensive one must win.
Hint availability and card events are separate issues. A desired skill must actually be obtainable during the run; do not plan around a skill merely because a card’s database page lists it. For the current CM example, finish with the CM21 run checklist.
